however / nevertheless / still: öncekine rağmen, beklenmeyen bir şey. instead / rather: bunun yerine (önceki cümle genellikle olumsuzdur: 'Merchants rarely travelled the whole route; instead, goods passed from trader to trader.'). on the contrary: tam aksine (önceki yanlış bir fikri düzeltir). in contrast / on the other hand: iki şeyi karşılaştırır.
YDS Tuzağı: 'instead' öncesinde olumsuz ya da reddedilen bir durum ister; olumlu bir cümleden sonra 'instead' anlamı bozar. 'However' cümle ortasında virgüller arasında da gelebilir: 'In recent years, however, …'
